Arkansas's Timber Marvel: Anthony Timberlands Center Poised to Revolutionize Architecture

Sponsored by H.G.D. Apparel Co.

The Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville is a visionary wooden wonder that's set to inspire eco-friendly buildings of the future. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Grafton Architects and local Modus Studio, this striking facility rises like a heroic cluster of barns along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, its cascading roof and six-story glass facade revealing bustling workshops with robotic arms and gantry cranes crafting sustainable timber prototypes. As a "storybook of wood," it showcases hewn, carved, jointed, and laminated timber techniques, blending Arkansas's vast forests—covering 60% of the state—with hands-on education for aspiring designers.

Families and students can delight in its innovative spaces, from expansive fabrication labs to serene outdoor terraces with end-grain cobbled floors offering forest views, fostering creativity and collaboration. Under Dean Peter MacKeith's leadership, the center advances low-carbon construction, affordable housing solutions, and 3D-printing with sawdust, drawing talent to NWA and boosting our local economy. Community leaders hail it as a beacon of sustainability, encouraging exploration of nature's resources while creating joyful learning adventures for all ages. This heartwarming achievement celebrates Fayetteville's artistic spirit and positions Northwest Arkansas as a global leader in green innovation.
